1. Trial barley straw as a means to naturally retard cyanobacteria growth.
Barley straw dispersed in mesh bags has been used effectively in both the US and UK. Although barley straw does not kill cyanobacteria, studies have shown that it inhibits cyanobacteria growth, while having no harmful effects on other plant life or on wildlife. Friends of Long Pond Marstsons Mills hopes to gain approval for six barley straw installations at the north end of Long Pond in the spring of 2024. Each installation will have 5-6 mesh bags filled with about 3 pounds of barley straw each, tethered to a rope which is anchored by a concrete block. For details regarding this proposal, click HERE.
2. Continue to monitor progress and assist Town in implementation of floating treatment wetlands by Spring 2024.
3. Continue to educate and encourage area homeowners to take steps to reduce the flow of excess nutrients and harmful chemicals into Long Pond.
