NOTE: On 7/20/22, APCC implemented updates to its protocol, noted in white print.
APCC threshold for
Potential for Concern  = one or more of the following criteria are met:
  1. Actual Microcystin concentration of 8 (formerly 4) parts per billion (as measured in sample taken at Association Beach.)
  2. A cyanobacteria growth rate of 5% will no longer trigger "Potential for Concern"
  3. A slight cyanobacteria scum or small patches of cyanobacteria bloom material sampled and confirmed.
While these conditions pose low to minimal health risks to adults, they can be dangerous for children or pets if water is ingested.
Pet exposure can be from drinking pond water or grooming after swimming. Pets exposed to suspected cyanotoxins should be rapidly assessed by a veterinarian.

APCC threshold for Use Restriction (red on their cyano map)  = one or more of the following criteria:
  1. Actual Microcystin concentration of 8 parts per billion at Beach  (Town threshold for Closure = 10 parts per billion)
  2. Significant cyanobacteria scum or large patches of cyanobacteria bloom material sampled and confirmed.
Recreational risk to adults is moderate following exposure. Recreational risks are especially high for children and pets following exposure through accidental ingestion of contaminated water.

Town of Barnstable threshold for Pet Advisory = APCC's Potential for Concern or actual Microcystin toxin at or above 1 ppb.
Town threshold for Warning = scum seen, but not persistent or actual Microcystin of 4 - 8 ppb and low cyanobacteria biomass.
Town threshold for Closure = persistent scum or actual Microcystin above 8 ppb.
